1. Intro

This is a collection of frequently used commands for the Transmission daemon.

The servername is your torrent servers hostname.

The ID is the torrent-id which you can find by running #3.

Most of the commands have a short form, eg -r instead of --remove. Check the sources list for reference.

2. Selected commands

  1. Remove torrent and delete associated data:
    # transmission-remote servername -t ID --remove-and-delete
  2. Remove torrent file only:
    # transmission-remote servername -t ID --remove
  3. List all torrents:
    # transmission-remote servername -l

If your torrent list is long, try sorting it using the below. It will sort on the torrent name in the thenth column.
    # transmission-remote servername -l|sort -k10
    Try this:
    # watch -n 2 transmission-remote servername -l
  4. Add torrent:
    # transmission-remote servername -a http://mirror.hh.se/centos/7/isos/x86_64/CentOS-7-x86_64-Everything-1804.torrent
  5. Add magnet link:
    # transmission-remote -a servername magnet:?xt=urn:btih:blah-blah-blah
  6.  Start torrent:
    # transmission-remote servername -t ID --start
  7. Stop torrent:
    # transmission-remote servername -t ID --stop
  8. Start all torrents:
    # transmission-remote servername -tall --start
  9. Stop all torrents:
    # transmission-remote servername -tall --stop

3. Bonus hints

Is one of your seeding torrents starred as below?

ID Done Have ETA Up Down Ratio Status Name
20 100% 619.0 MiB Done 0.0 0.0 14.4 Seeding ubuntu-14.04.5-server-amd64.iso
23* 100% 1.88 GiB Done 0.0 0.0 49.2 Idle ubuntu-mate-18.04.1-desktop-i386.iso

It usually means there is a problem, or error, "upstream". The star may come and go, but if it stays there, there might be something fishy.

For example, Canonical replaces its Ubuntu-torrents every so often, and the star shows up when the old distro torrent is gone and replaced with a new minor version.

Just remove the old one, and add the new! Problem solved.
